Keeping drivers compliant with Driver CPC rules takes time.
For busy transport operators, it can feel like a full-time job on its own.
That is where a Driver CPC Consortium comes in.
At Driver Link Training, we make managing your drivers’ training simple, so you can focus on running your business.
What Is a Driver CPC Consortium?
A Driver CPC Consortium is a system that helps companies manage their drivers’ Driver CPC training in one place.
Every professional lorry, coach and bus driver in the UK must complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years to keep their qualification valid.
Tracking those hours across a whole team is not easy.
With our Driver CPC Consortium, we take on that admin for you.
We handle course uploads, keep attendance records and make sure your drivers stay compliant.
No more chasing paperwork or worrying about missed deadlines.
Why It Matters for Your Business
Running Driver CPC training in-house can pull your team away from the day job.
A Driver CPC Consortium changes that. Here is why it works so well:
Compliance made easy – We keep on top of the rules so you don’t have to worry about falling behind.
Full training management – From booking to record keeping, we manage the whole process.
Accurate attendance records – Every session is logged and stored properly.
Course uploads handled for you – We upload completed hours, so your drivers’ records stay up to date.
This saves you time, money and stress.
You get peace of mind knowing your drivers are qualified and legal to work.
Flexible Course Dates
We know drivers can’t always take a weekday off.
That is why our Driver CPC courses run twice a week, on Thursdays and Saturdays.
The Saturday option means you don’t have to lose a driver during the working week.
You can view all upcoming dates on our course calendar and book the sessions that suit your team best.
From driver wellbeing to digital tachographs, our modules cover the topics that matter most on the road.
More Than Just Driver CPC
A Driver CPC Consortium is just one part of what we offer.
If you want to strengthen your operation further, our Transport Management CPC course gives you the skills to run a compliant and efficient transport business.
It is an industry-recognised qualification that many operators find invaluable.
You can explore everything we do on our services page, and pick up handy tips and updates over on our blog.

Ready to make Driver CPC training easier? Let us take the pressure off.
Keeping on top of Driver CPC training can feel like a full-time job in itself.
Between tracking hours, storing course materials and staying compliant with DVSA rules, the paperwork soon piles up.
That’s where the Driver CPC Portal comes in.
In this post, we’ll explain what the portal is, how it works and why it makes life easier for drivers, transport operators and training companies alike.
What Is the Driver CPC Portal?
The Driver CPC Portal is a secure online system that gives you quick access to everything you need for your Driver CPC training.
Rather than juggling folders, emails and printed sheets, you log in from one place and find your course materials, records and modules ready to go.
At Driver Link Training, we’ve built the portal to serve three distinct groups, each with their own dedicated login.
First, there are drivers completing their periodic Driver CPC training with us.
Second, we support companies and employers whose drivers are undertaking their training through Driver Link Training, giving them easy oversight of their team’s progress.
Third, we provide access for consortium members who deliver Driver CPC courses using our material under our centre approval
Both get a simple login that puts DVSA-approved content at their fingertips.
We’re a family-run business, established in 2010 and based in Skelmersdale.
As the leading transport training provider in the North West, we know how valuable your time is.
The portal is our way of cutting the admin so you can focus on the road or your business.
How Does the Portal Work?
The idea is straightforward. Consortium members get their own online login.
Once you’re in, you can reach approved Driver CPC course materials without any fuss.
For training companies and transport operators who join our Driver CPC Consortium, the portal is even more powerful.
You gain access to fully approved courses that are ready to deliver, so you skip the fees and heavy admin of getting your own material signed off with the DVSA.
What You Get With the Consortium
Sign up as a consortium member and you’ll receive:
12 x 3.5-hour DVSA-approved courses, written by experienced trainers and ready to deliver
Qwizdom interactive software built into the material, keeping sessions engaging
Everything delivered under our centre approval, saving you the hassle of DVSA sign-off
This means you can start running Driver CPC training quickly, without building materials from scratch.
Key Benefits of the Driver CPC Portal
Here’s why the portal works so well for everyone involved:
Easy access to course materials – all your DVSA-approved content sits in one login.
Interactive learning – Qwizdom software keeps drivers engaged rather than just ticking a box.
Simple compliance tracking – keep training records tidy and ready when you need them.
Time saved for transport companies – no chasing paperwork or losing a driver for the day.
Less admin burden – the consortium option removes the cost and effort of DVSA approval.
Ready-made modules – 12 approved courses at your fingertips.
For a transport operator running a busy fleet, this matters.
Instead of pulling a manager off other jobs to sort compliance, the portal keeps everything organised in the background.
Who Is the Portal For?
The Driver CPC Portal suits a wide range of people:
Professional drivers completing their periodic training with us
Transport operators who want to train drivers in-house
Small training companies looking to deliver quality courses without the setup costs
Driving instructors exploring new revenue streams
Whichever group you fall into, the portal takes the stress out of Driver CPC.
You can view our full range of services to see how it fits alongside our other training options.
Ready to Book Your Driver CPC Training?
We run Driver CPC courses twice a week, on Thursdays and Saturdays, so you can fit training around your work.
If those days don’t suit your business, just get in touch and we’ll help.

Top 4 Benefits of DriverLink’s Driver CPC Portal for Drivers

The DriverLink CPC Portal simplifies this by putting everything in one place. It’s your go-to hub for all your Driver CPC needs.
From one easy-to-use screen, you can view your training hours, upcoming deadlines, and overall progress. No more searching through paperwork or worrying about missing something important.

Never Miss a CPC Card Expiry Date
Driving with an expired CPC card can lead to hefty fines and even result in you being taken off the road. Remembering your renewal date is crucial, but it’s easy to lose track.
When you undertake our Driver CPC course, the DriverLink CPC Portal takes the stress out of this by tracking your expiry date.
The system clearly displays when your CPC card is due for renewal, so you’ll always know when it’s time to book your next course. This feature helps you stay compliant, avoid last-minute panic, and keep your career on track.

To renew your CPC card, you need to complete 35 hours of training before it expires. The DriverLink CPC Portal makes it simple to track your progress when you are on our course.
You can see how many hours you’ve completed and how many you still need to do—all at a glance. This helps you plan your training schedule effectively, ensuring you have plenty of time to complete your hours without disrupting your work.

Transporting hazardous goods is a highly regulated activity designed to protect people, property, and the environment. However, when these materials are carried in Limited Quantities (LQ), the rules differ slightly—and are often misunderstood.
This guide will cover:
What “Limited Quantities” means
Who needs training
When training should take place
Employer responsibilities
Why LQ still does not mean low risk
What Are Limited Quantities?
Under the ADR (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road), certain hazardous materials can be transported in Limited Quantities if they fall below specific thresholds. These thresholds depend on:
The type of substance
Its hazard classification
The amount per inner and outer packaging
When shipped correctly, LQ packages do not require full ADR vehicle equipment or fully ADR-certified drivers. However, training is still mandatory.
Who Must Receive Training?
Even though LQ transport is exempt from some ADR requirements, every person involved in the carriage of hazardous goods in Limited Quantities must be trained. This includes:
1. Drivers
Drivers must understand:
How to recognise LQ labels
Basic hazards associated with the materials
Emergency procedures
Safe loading/unloading practices
Documentation requirements
2. Warehouse & Depot Staff
Anyone handling LQ packages must be trained in:
Correct storage
Packaging checks
Segregation rules
Spill prevention
3. Office & Administrative Personnel
This includes planners, transport coordinators, customer service teams, and managers overseeing transport operations. They need:
Awareness of LQ rules
Knowledge of packaging and marking requirements
Understanding of legal obligations
4. Contractors & Agency Workers
Training must apply regardless of employment status.
When Should Training Take Place?
Training must be provided before an employee performs any duties involving hazardous goods, including Limited Quantities. This includes:
On induction for new starters
Before a change in job role
Before working with a new hazard class
Before new processes or packaging types are introduced
Refresher Training
ADR requires that safety competence is kept up to date. Best practice is to refresh LQ training:
Every 2–3 years, or
After an incident, near-miss, or procedure change
Employer Responsibilities
Employers are legally accountable for safety, even if goods qualify for LQ exemptions. They must ensure:
Competent providers deliver training
Training is documented (records must be kept)
Staff demonstrate understanding
Procedures match ADR requirements
Key regulations include:
ADR Regulations
Health and Safety at Work Act
Carriage of Dangerous Goods (CDG) Regulations
Why Limited Quantities Still Require Serious Attention
A common misconception is that LQ equals “low risk.” In reality:
Flammable liquids still burn
Corrosives still cause injury
Pressurised gases can still explode
LQ provisions make transport simpler—not safer by default. Proper understanding and training are essential to keep people safe and avoid costly compliance failures.
From the 2nd February 2026, you will now receive your prohibition clearance notice automatically by email within 24 hours of your vehicle passing its prohibition clearance test.
The email will be sent directly to the operator whose email address is linked to the vehicle on the Vehicle Operator Licencing system (VOL). This replaces paper copies for a quicker, greener process.
DVSA have stated that:
“This will help save time for our colleagues, align with our sustainability goals and brings heavy vehicle clearances in line with the existing prohibition clearance process for light vehicles”
How it works:
Initial Prohibition (PG9): A vehicle examiner finds serious defects (eg: brakes / steering) during a roadside check. They will then issue a PG9 and the vehicle must not be driven until this is fixed.
Repairs: The owner fixes the defects and takes the vehicle for a re-inspection, usually at an authorised testing facility (ATF).
Prohibition Removal (PG10): If the vehicle passes the inspection (often full MOT), the examiner issues a PG10 form, removing the restriction.
If the prohibition has been issued by the police instead of DVSA, the Vehicle Standards Assessor (VSA) will still issue you with a PG10 prohibition clearance notice.

The news is out that us as a training company have been anticipating. Driver CPC changes will be coming into effect as of December 3rd 2024.
As a HGV / PCV driver, you will be able to choose from the following to stay qualified:
National Driver CPC
International Driver CPC
International Driver CPC
This is the new name for the way that Driver CPC works now. If you would like to drive in the UK and EU, there are no changes for you and this is how that looks:
If a course is split, this must be done on 2 consecutive days
The courses must be 7 hours long
National Driver CPC
This is the new flexible version of Driver CPC however only permits you to drive in the UK. It also means that you can take a combination of National / International or 35 hours of National Driver CPC training every 5 years.
This is how the new version will look:
If the course is split, this no longer needs to be done on 2 consecutive days and the training provider can set their own timings
The course must be 3 hours and 30 minutes long however training providers can still offer longer courses if they want to
To summarise, from December 3rd 2024, you will have 2 options on how you do your Driver CPC:
Take 35 hours of International Driver CPC training every 5 years to be able to drive in the UK and EU.
Take 35 hours of National Driver CPC (or a combination of 35 hours of National and International CPC training) every 5 years to be able to drive in the UK.
Are you returning to professional driving?
At the moment, if your CPC has expired, you must do 35 hours of periodic training before you are able to return back to driving. However, as of 1st February 2025, this will change.
If your CPC expired between 60 days and 2 years, you will have 4 options:
Option 1: International Driver CPC Training This is the current process 1 – Take 35 hours of International Driver CPC training 2 – Then can start driving professionally in the UK and EU
Option 2 – National Driver CPC training 1 – Take 35 hours of International Driver CPC training 2 – Then can start driving professionally in the UK
Option 3 – International Driver CPC training with a ‘return to driving’ module 1 – Take a new 7 hour ‘return to driving’ module 2 – Then can start driving professionally in the UK 3 – Take 28 hours of other international Driver CPC training within 12 months of completing the ‘return to driving’ module 4 – Then can start driving professionally in the EU
Option 4 – National Driver CPC training with a ‘return to driving’ module 1 – Take a new 7 hour ‘return to driving’ module 2 – Then can start driving professionally in the UK 3 – Take 28 hours of either national or international Driver CPC training within 12 months of completing the ‘return to driving’ module
For drivers who’s CPC expired more than 2 years ago, nothing will change for you and you will have to complete 35 hours of training before you can start driving again.
Driver CPC Cards The rules surrounding Driver CPC Cards is still the same and you must carry this on you at all times whilst driving professionally. Depending on which option you take to complete your Driver CPC, will determine on which type of CPC card you receive. If you complete the International CPC, your card will look the same as the current card. This is also the same for if you complete the Initial CPC tests. If you complete the National CPC, the card will look similar however will display that you can only drive in the UK.
If you have any questions to the new changes, please email our training department on the following:
The Senior Traffic Commissioner, Richard Turfitt, has once again highlighted the critical need for all operators to address the risk of bridge strikes.
According to Network Rail, there are around 1,800 bridge strikes annually—averaging five each day.
Not only are these incidents highly disruptive, but they also cost UK taxpayers an estimated £23 million every year.
Bridge strikes pose a significant compliance risk for operators. Suppose a vehicle in your fleet is involved in a bridge strike. In that case, you may face a public inquiry with the Traffic Commissioner, potentially leading to severe consequences for your Operator’s License.
To help you avoid this risk, we’ve outlined five proactive strategies that can make a big difference in reducing bridge strikes and protecting your business.
Five Essential Tips to Reduce Bridge Strike Risks
1. Implement Route Planning for Drivers
While it might seem unnecessary with professional drivers, route planning is a crucial preventative measure.
Pre-planning routes help avoid height-restricted bridges, weight limits, and other obstacles that could result in dangerous and costly errors.
By giving drivers clear guidance, you not only enhance safety but also reduce their stress, creating a smoother, safer work environment.
2. Use a Defect Reporting App
Investing in a defect reporting app allows you to enhance safety checks with added functionality.
Many apps allow you to customise questions for drivers during defect checks, including photographic evidence options.
For example, drivers can upload photos of the trailer headboard and the in-cab height indicator to confirm compatibility. Document every instance you review these checks to maintain a strong safety record.
3. Schedule Regular Toolbox Talks
Monthly toolbox talks are a powerful way to keep bridge strike awareness at the forefront of people’s minds. Aim for at least two dedicated toolbox talks on bridge strikes each year.
These sessions may seem frequent, but consistent reminders will reinforce their importance and help prevent costly mistakes.
As always, document each session to show compliance and commitment to safety.
4. Prioritise Driver CPC Training on Bridge Strikes
A proactive Transport Manager will prioritise Driver CPC courses that address critical issues like bridge strikes.
With 21 recommended CPD hours per year, one course in a five-year period should focus specifically on bridge strike prevention. This essential training can go a long way in helping drivers avoid costly mistakes—at no extra cost to the operator.
5. Establish Clear Training Procedures
Outline specific steps for drivers to follow to avoid bridge strikes. These procedures may include verifying that Sat Nav devices are LGV-compatible or even eliminating the use of Sat Nav entirely.
Other steps could address strategies for navigating road work diversions or include guidelines on when to use shorter trailers to minimise risk.
Document these policies to ensure everyone is on the same page and reinforce your commitment to compliance.
